How to do devotion

FAQ’s:

Q:  What do the words ‘sadhana’ and ‘sadhak’ mean?
A:  ‘Sadhana’ means ‘practice of devotion’, and ‘sadhak’ means an aspiring devotee.

Q:  Can I do sadhana lying down?
A:  No, doing so induces sleep.  Sitting in an upright position is the best posture for sadhana.

Q:  Does sadhana have to be done at any particular time?
A:  Early morning time is best, because the mind is fresh and because no one is making any demands on you at that time. However, if early morning is utterly impossible, then you may do sadhana at any time during the day.  Whether it is early morning, afternoon, evening or night, it is best to engage in sadhana at the same time every day.  Doing so helps discipline the mind.

Q:  Do I have to take a bath before sitting down for sadhana?
A:  It is not necessary, but recommended.  If you are unable to bathe due to health or other reasons, you should at least brush your teeth and wash your face.  Doing so will make you more alert.

Q:  Does the place have to be pure?
A:  There is no place that is pure.  Countless sins have been committed everywhere.  The place where you sit for sadhana will be made pure by your devotion and selfless tears you will shed there.

Q:  As a woman, I have been hearing since childhood that at that certain time during the month I should not engage in devotion.  Is this correct?
A:  Padma Puran says that even if you are impure, you become pure by meditating on the lotus-eyed Krishna.  Moreover, the body (male or female) is dirty all the time.  And dirtier still is the mind.  Devotion to God purifies body and mind.  Therefore, sadhana should be done every day of the month, without exception.

Q:  Why do you say it is important to shed tears?
A:  Tears wash away the impurities of the heart, which then melts for Shri Radha-Krishna, for whom we are shedding tears.

Q:  What should I do if I am unable to shed tears?
A:  Feel badly about the inability to shed tears, and if you are unable to shed tears of love and longing for Shri Radha-Krishna, at least cry thinking of all the sins you have committed, as a result of which you are not able to cry in front of God.

Q:  What should I do when I feel sleepy?
A:  Stand up until sleep goes away.  You may also find it helpful to splash cold water on your face.
